London Marathon

London Marathon : The marathon has raised £1bn since the event started in 1981, according to race sponsors Virgin Money. Sir Andy Murray will be firing the starting gun at this year's London Marathon from 09:05 BST.

Despite the predicted wind and rain, runners are targeting over 80 Guinness World Records - including Sir Mo Farah, aiming to break his own British record.

Spectators can view runners approaching the 12 mile mark as they run across this London landmark.

The area around Tower Hill is a good location to spot runners, however the London Marathon organisers warned that it will be extremely busy.

Organisers recommended walking up to Bank station to hop on the Docklands Light Railway and catch up with the race a few miles further along the route.

Miles 14 to 21

Participants will have just crossed the halfway point as they head out east towards Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs

Event director Hugh Brasher said: "No other mass participation event comes anywhere near this kind of fundraising.

Sometime shortly after midday on Sunday, it is predicted the men’s record for the London marathon will be smashed. It would be a memorable way of marking this year’s race, which will see the amount raised for good causes since it began in 1981 edge beyond £1bn.

If however the record is untroubled, then this may be good news for Mo Farah, the man hundreds of thousands flocking to London have come to see and who is embroiled in controversy over a disputed incident involving a brawl in an Ethiopian hotel.

Most experts agree that, despite his remarkable conversion from track champion to marathon runner, Britain’s Sir Mo will be left trailing by the current London record holder, Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge, whose time of 2:01:39, set in Berlin last year, saw the previous world record obliterated by an astonishing 78 seconds.

"We would like to thank every runner, supporter, donator, charity, volunteer, sponsor, spectator, staff member and everyone else who has contributed to this wonderful total."

Around 40,000 participants will set off between Greenwich Park and Blackheath in south-east London tomorrow, in the 39th annual event.
